P2P Verona, Italy: Days 14 & 15

It was very strange getting up and only seeing Randall at breakfast!  After we ate, we caught a bus to Verona to see the sights.  Our first stop was Castelvecchio, pictured below.

The main site in the city is at the Piazza Bra, the center of town.  Here is the arena, which is the third largest in all of Italy.  Today events still occur at the arena.  This arena was built in the 1st century BC, and is famous for having the name of the builder, architect Lucius Vitruvius, engraved on it.

Here are some pictures of what the arena looks like on the inside.

The arena is still used to this day for shows, and some of the show items were outside the theater for its upcoming production.

On our way through the city of Verona, we spotted a street perfomer dressed as a baby.  He was naughty!

Our next stop was the "Casa di Giuletta," also known as Juliet's house.  Here was the world famous balcony where she spoke to Romeo.

People lock their love outside of Juliet's house, as well as stick their gum on the wall.

There is even a statue of her, and the pose is to put your hand on her breast.  The line was too long, so we didn't wait to stand with her.

On the way into Juliet's house, people leave their mark of love with graffitti.

Next we were off to find Romeo's house!  Even with the map, it was quite confusing.  Juliet's house was easy to find because there were signs pointing the way, and it was very busy with tourists.  Romeo's house was boring, and it was harder to spot.  Here is a sign that marks his home.

While wondering through the town, we strolled along the riverfront to see the views of Verona.

We went through many shops and piazzas during our day in Verona.  Below is the statue in a piazza of Dante.

The last and final stop for us was Juliet's tomb on the other side of town.  We stopped at the tourist information desk to make sure we were headed in the right direction.  Why wasn't Romeo buried with Juliet???

Overall, Randall and I had a nice day seeing all of Verona.  We even stopped for a slice of pizza for lunch along with some gelato and a slushy.  It was hot!!!  We were surprised that we never ran into any of our students at the major sites.  We will see them in the morning as we make our way to Venice together for the last quarter of our trip!
